Boosting indigenous arms manufacturing, by the private sector, has been one of the aims of
Modi's MAKE IN INDIA. The need for huge investmentin plant and machinery, technology and skill
development has been felt. Simultaneously, the tax and duties structure also has to be made attractive for in-
house manufacturing. Though the budget remains opaque, Modi's words at the Aero India show gives some
hope in this regard.
'Make' projects for which 144.21 crore has been allocated. In this regard, the two industry
consortiums- one of TATA Power SED and L&T and the other of Bharat Electronics Limited(BEL) and
Rolta India Ltd-each of which won a contract from the Ministry of Defence to develop a prototype under the
Indian Army's Battlefield Management System (BMS) programme.
